AI in Higher Education: Teaching in the Age of AI

Whether AI competence is seen as a future skill which
should be taught to students from the start, or if the
use of AI should rather be prohibited or at least restric-
ted is a familiar discussion among university teachers
in all fields of study. No matter which side they are
on, university teachers are con-fronted with students
who do use AI for their university work anyway, so it is
necessary to understand the basics of AI to be able to
teach and conduct exams properly.

In this online workshop, participants will receive a
systematic overview of the current state of AI that is
relevant to university teaching. We will look at how AI,
more precisely Large Language Models (LLMs) such
as ChatGPT work, we will discuss their strengths and
weaknesses and what this all means for university tea-
ching. We will also look at the legal framework of using
AI in academic practices. Participants will get an over-
view of a range of AI tools relevant to teaching and we
go through the basics of prompt competence.
